Run Boys Run!!!

Tomorrow is a HUGE DAY!!!

It’s race day. that’s right everyone…tomorrow is the big race we mentioned here.

I was talking to someone from the church in New Mexico today just to try to get an update on where they were in raising the money they needed to help support the church in Watts. I’m gonna be honest, i was a little disappointed…their only at $3400. That’s $100 short of 1/2 way.

PLEASE consider how you, your youth groups, or churches can support this amazing ministry. I know we’re all trying to do what we can fundraising wise to raise money for our own groups…but I’m asking you to join me in helping support these guys. We actually just gave 10% of our last fundraising event to the project…it was only like $100…but it helped my students and church understand that LIFE 2007 isn’t only about us. God’s got a plan for every student there…

You can still donate. Go here to find out how.

I’ll try to give you guys an update as soon as i hear. Hopefully Kent will recover quick enough to come to LIFE;)

Good luck guys…we’re praying for your safety and stamina~

Watts for LIFE

One of the things that I love most about LIFE is all the different groups of people that we get to meet; people from all over the country and even the WORLD! As exciting as that is, there are still people who can’t come to LIFE that we won’t get to meet.

I want to tell you about one of the coolest opportunities to help out a church in need that I’ve heard about this year. It’s called the “Watts for LIFE Project“.

To set it up a little bit, LALife.com rates Watts “0.5 out of 10″ in safety and schools. Simply put, it’s a place that’s filled with darkness. Todd Grant experiences this daily as part of a church planting team in Watts. His desire is to present Jesus to be “the light that shines in this darkness” like John 1:5 talk about.

Jesse Taylor, a youth pastor from a small town in New Mexico, and his church have connected with this church plant and have a passion to see that Todd’s church plant in Watts gets the same chance to go to LIFE as their students do. So they’ve been setting aside a portion off all the money they raise for the Watt’s church. they only problem is they can’t seem to raise enough.

So Jesse got in contact with Kent Julian and had an idea to help raise money. They found a common interest and “ran” with it. They are going to be running a combined 58 miles on a dirt path starting at about 7,000ft and elevating to over 10,000ft!!!! Kent and Todd will be running a 1/2 marathon on this route, and Jesse will be running 50K (33.8 miles) on this route. We’re talking major training and commitment for these three guys.

I’ll be honest, i want to run to help raise money too. But reality sets in, and there is no way & no how that I, in my out of shape body, would EVER be able to run on these paths and not kill myself. Thankfully, i can still support them by sponsoring the team for the miles they run (about 58 total).

Can you imagine if 250 groups or individuals could sponsor the $1 a mile? We would help them raise 2X what they need!!!! Then they’ll take the excess and put it right into the church plant! Will you consider sharing this story with your group like I’m planning on? I’m looking forward to being a part of this with all of you~

Cow Plop Bingo??!!

OK…I’m going to be honest here. If you haven’t had a chance to check out all the comment posted on the blogs, you need to! May I suggest starting with Mo Money Mo Problems. Scroll all the way down till you get to Kami’s comment, and now you know what I’m responding to today.

Kami, so far, I’m totally giving you the most creative fundraiser award. We’re all familiar with the car washes and pasta lunches/dinners…but the Cow Plop BINGO takes raising money to a whole new level.

I’m sure some of you out there, maybe just like me, thought this was a joke. It’s not…its TOTALLY SERIOUS! Kami, I commend you for knowing your culture and trying to “pinch” every bit of cash for you kids out of the folks around you.

If I were to try something like that where I’m at in NJ, I think people would be more amazed at the fact that there is a cow in front of them then to think about betting on where he’s going to “drop”. They’d probably be wondering if that was the 85% lean cow or the 90% lean cow. I know might be a North Jersey thing, but there have got to be some other folks out there who understand where I’m coming from. Anybody want to show some love?

Kami, do me a favor. Tape this event for me. When the cow has done its “business” edit down the tape ( I don’t know how exciting this event is up till the cow smiles☺) and put it up on you tube. Send me an email and I’ll make sure I link to it here in the blog.

And anyone else who’s got some interesting video…send me the links and I’ll do what I can to show the love.

Too much too soon

As I was looking over some of those ideas, I was totally encouraged! Keep the ideas coming — they’ll really help us all. But in the meantime, remember that too many fundraisers too close together leads to a church that looks at the youth group like a bunch of little cash vampires.

As we’ve been planning out our fundraising schedule, we had to make sure we were planning the ones that we think we’re gonna raise the most money, but not putting them right on top of each other. People will be more likely to help and support if we aren’t always on top of them about giving us money. So with that in mind, how much time are you putting in between fundraisers (don’t forget to tell us what they are, where you’re from, and how much $$ you raised so we can steal — use — your ideas)!

Mo Money Mo Problems

the notorious B.I.G. hit the nail on the head back in ‘97 with his one song that got him famous. i still remember watching the video on MTV and singing along with Mase and Puff Daddy before he went schizophrenic …i know…it’s sad… but this song has taken on a whole new meaning now that i’ve got to help all my kids raise money to get to LIFE. i’m sure that all of our prices are going to be different b/c we’re all spread throughout the country (and world!) but we still all face the problem of having to use the f word. Fundraising. in my time as a youth pastor, this has been one of my least favorite things to do, but i understand it’s part of the territory. some of you guys out there though are super awesome at fundraising…HOW DO YOU DO IT??!!! what are some things that you do that bring in the benjamin’s?! remember to tell us where you are from…this way people in your areas might be able to use some of the ideas. i’m sure a tractor wash might work in some areas, but not in mine:)
i’m looking forward to all your ideas~~
